December 09 stoat trapping news letter Thursday, 7 January 2010
Happy New Years to you all.

As you can see by the graph below the stoats and rats are making their way into the traps and are getting snapped up. Jolly good job!!!.

The traps along the South Coast track are also doing their bit, to rid the area of the nasties.

It is a bit sad that somebody has confused our work with the trapping project and the good work we are all doing, with the proposed 1080 poisoning of the Waitutu area.
Some anti 1080 campaigners have taken to spray painting the traps and destroying three of the interpretation panels The one at the Wairaurahiri Doc hut has been painted with anti 1080 slogans and a large chunk has been broken off, The panel at the Percy Burn Viaduct has been wedged off the wall and has disappeared completely leaving only the corners on the wall. Lastly the panel at the start of the South Coast track has had an anti 1080 cartoon glued over the middle of the interpretation panel so it is now unreadable with the remainder of the glue still attached to the sign. There is also at least 6 traps missing. I am going in on Monday with two volunteers to try and locate these traps.

Now if these numb nuts would just sit back and think about what they are doing they may just figure it out that these traps are doing an awesome job.
They help rid the area of these nasty pests. Or do they just want to encourage this property damage to the extent that we can no longer afford to keep fixing their vandalism and give up on the trapping….. and when 1080 comes along as an option to control the predators on the Eastern side of the Wairaurahiri River they all jump up on their high horses and say what about trapping to rid the forests of the predators Well HELLO!!!!!. There is a very good trapping programme in place which is looking to increase the traps already in place. The Hump Ridge Track is getting organized to trap their track and if I can get a couple of other trap lines along the face of the Hump Ridge we may be looking at eradication of rats and stoats in the controlled area. Wouldn’t that be awesome!!!!

So if any of you know who may be responsible for the destruction the traps and signs please have a word to them or encourage them to ring me… It is really getting tiresome.

For the record we at Wairaurahiri Jet, Johan and Joyce are sitting firmly on the fence on the, 1080 in the Waitutu, issue. We try to be as well informed as we can, also with our guests we have a wide variety of opinions and much discussion on the subject. One thing for sure, the more we learn the less we know!
Now I’ve had my whine onto the good stuff. Trap kills for the last 3 months.

Thanks again for your continued support because with out you all it just wouldn’t be possible.
If you think your two year sponsorship has expired and you wish to re sponsor your traps please email me

Stoat trapping newsletter september 09 Tuesday, 29 September 2009
Hello all.

Hope you are all fit and well.

Did you manage to catch the TV 1 programme, South with Marcus Lush as the presenter?
Johan’s almost famous now with people on the street saying “you’re the guy on TV the other night”.

We have been very busy checking traps on the river and the new South Coast traps. The traps have been snapping away on the evil pests. (yippee)
There has been an amazing turn a round in the stoat, rat ratio.
This month alone we have caught 24 rats and only 2 stoats.
At the beginning when we first started this trapping project the ratios were the other way around.
It seems to be a favorable year for rats. Worst luck.
My biggest worry is that the stoats will breed up, rack of rat is one of their favorite foods and like most creatures when the belly is full and content, you start to look about for a mate to while away a few minutes with.
I really hope we don’t get an increase in the already too many stoats in our forest to kill off more of our native birds.

Thanks to all of you sponsors for your incredible support I’m sure we are making a difference. Thanks to those of you that have renewed your sponsorship. It’s awesome to have your support.

We hope to have annual bird counts in the areas of the Eastern bank of the Wairaurahiri River and the South Coast Track. This should give as some facts and figures to go by, other than our return guests commenting on the increase of the bird life. Even though the comments are great to hear.

Now here is the real good stuff the Kills for the last 4 months.

There are two lists of traps now with the addition of the South Coast Traps (49 traps from the Wairaurahiri River to just past the Percy Burn Viaduct)

DEATH TO THE STOATS

Stoat trapping news letter March 09 -may 09 Monday, 15 June 2009
Wairaurahiri Stoat trapping news letter

Hello to you all.

We have all suffered an early start to winter this year with so much water falling from the sky to fill our nearly empty river.
Whilst we had a low river during April we took the opportunity to upgrade the boat with new computers. It’s made an amazing difference to the noise and economy of the boat. Hard for my brain to comprehend that two little boxes can cause the changes.
Johan is rapt with its performance he says it’s like having a new boat.

I have heard through the grape vine that the planned pest control that was to be taking place in the Waitutu Forrest has been postponed till next year. Now I really hope the small group of Kaka can hold out through another breeding season.
I hope the trapping that we are all doing along the Wairaurahiri River will help by creating a barrier to the pest and the recent trapping the Department has carried out will be enough to help this group of Kaka to survive

South Coast Track trapping project.

We are planning to start this next stage of the trapping on the 12th June.
Thanks to Janet Gregory from Land Care Trust, Janet has been able to secure some funding through the Biodiversity funds to get the first 35 traps out from the Wairaurahiri River to Percy Burn viaduct. We also have had heaps of support from trap sponsors and volunteers for this next stage of our trapping project a big thanks you to you all. It won’t be long now till your traps will start catching evil predators.

Sponsorship renewals
Some of you have already re sponsored your stoat traps for another two years we thank you and the birds’ thank you. If your traps are coming up I may be getting in touch with you to see if you wish to re sponsor your traps for a further two years. If I miss you please drop me a email if you’re wanting to re sponsor.

Well done everyone. Thanks again for your continued support. You may have noticed that there are more rats being caught maybe that means that if the stoat population goes down that will leave room for the rats to build up so that may explain the flip flop on the tallies. See graph below

Keep and eye on the Southland times for the new South Coast trapping.
Thanks again every one

Lake Hauroko Poem by Doug Stanley Monday, 8 December 2008
I, Hauroko

I am Hauroko, here I lie, kin to the wind, and mountain and sky,
high and sweet my spirit sings, clean and sharp my beauty rings,
cold and dangerous like a knife, perhaps you fear I’ll take your life?
For when I dance with mountain air that sweeps down from it’s rocky lair,
perhaps I will not see you there, though you may cry out in despair,
for dancing occupies my all, I simply may not hear you call.

I am Hauroko, cold and deep, what dark deeds did mankind weep,
what ancient sadness do I keep? My peaceful people were betrayed,
by warlike neighbours they were slayed, and dark my waters ran in flood,
with mankind’s violence, mankind’s hate, mankind’s blood.
Their bodies wept in my embrace, can you feel the sadness of this place?
Long since my waters purged their stain, but in the ethers, echoes remain.

I guard the Princess of the Lake, and of this legend you can make
of many things, of death and doom, or just a wisely chosen tomb.
She had come to know my heart, and at the end she would not part
herself to any other place, for having found her state of grace,
she chose her final resting place, now none remain of her ancient race.
She was the leader of the slain,
and in her heart she keeps their pain, with dispensation to remain.
Although bones and sinews lie at rest, there is no end to the spirit’s quest.
A restless spirit only still to keep its own macabre vigil.
And so she waits, is waiting still.

I am Hauroko, I reside in valleys walled by mountain sides.
Your secrets in my depths I hide, I guard them with a Warrior’s pride.
I am Hauroko, wild and free, and if you come here you may see
me clothed in misty mystery. Oh you, the mystic, come to me,
and I will teach you how to be as I, a misty mystic mystery.

I am Hauroko, here I lie, look on me and wonder why
you can never be the same, now that your heart knows Hauroko’s name.

"Typo Squatting" beware good guys! Sunday, 7 December 2008
Snippet from Domainz ebusiness centre. News letter date 14th October 2008
Dear wjet.co.nz,
Are you at risk of Typo Squatting?

Have you ever wondered what happens when a customer enters your web address incorrectly? A growing trend has seen competitors and internet scammers “Typo Squatting” - registering domain names similar to yours - potentially stealing your online customers to drive more traffic to their own website.
How can you protect your website?

Simply, register variations of your web address and point traffic back to your main website. It’s an effective way of safeguarding your valuable online brand against unethical operators; ensuring customers reach your website every time
Boy I wish this email from our domain name supplier had come about 2 years ago!
Unfortunately we have become so famous that Hump Ridge Jet operators Paul and Gwen Roff feel the need to exploit this typo squatting by using our trading name and other similar domain names to what we use to mislead our valued customers onto their web site. In fact they have more domains that are similar to our name than they have of their own trading name.
But If you are reading this then you have found the correct path via the web by using our domain name www.wjet.co.nz and you can soon be enjoying a trip of a life time with Johan and Joyce on the Wairaurahiri Jet. Or perhaps you’ve found us to sponsor a predator trap to help our native birds in their plight to survive the onslaught from these horrid Stoats and rats.

So remember to tell your friends and family to beware of “unethical operators;” using unethical means to potentially steal online customers.

We at Wairaurahiri Jet hopes that in the near future there will be stronger laws in place to prevent these types of operators. At present there is the Domain Name Commission, which leads you through mediation to hopefully come to a mediated agreement. The next stage costs $2000 and the ones that are doing no wrong are out of pocket to fight against this internet scam.

Winter is finally Here Friday, 2 May 2008
Today it feels like winter is here at last. There is snow on the mountains and a chill in the air. Just perfect for jet boating. Seriously it’s awesome to be on Lake Hauroko with the snow capped mountains surrounding you, then its down the wild Wairaurahiri River, it is a purely invigorating breathtaking experience, From the lake to the sea and back.
Venison is still on the menu for our tasty kiwi style Bar B Que. Listen to Johan’s stories about the flora and fauna to the adventures of the venison recovery days.
Come with us to check the 70 stoat traps we have placed (with the help of our sponsors) along the river.
There seems to be a resurgence of bird life on the river banks, let’s hope that the removal of over 190 stoats might help them.
So what are you waiting for? Join Johan and Joyce on a trip of a lifetime with Wairaurahiri Jet in our winter wonder land.

poem by Mike Bayliss Thursday, 2 November 2006
LAKE POTERITERI

The jet boat sat in the water low
Two big V8’s made her go
Wind howled down the lake
Big waves and spray it did make
With packs on backs it started to rain
For that day we would not be dry again

Our best attempts to keep warm and dry
We huddled under a tatty old fly
Fresh salad sandwiches and a great fruitcake
With her own hands Caroline did make
The wind chill factor on the leading ridge
Made it colder than your average fridge

Mountain water on the Coleman cooker did go
Hot drinks and noodles gave an inner glow
Then down the hill with a quickened strut
All the way to the Poteriteri hut
Inhabitants had the fire blazing
Dry clothes, hot drinks had temperatures razing

Out in the boat they caught a fish
Whilst Mike prepared the evening dish
All of the pasta in the fire was not entirely his fault
It was caused by a beer and a single malt
Two on a bunk and two on the floor
To tired to hear if anyone did snore

On the tops and in the bush there was fresh snow
Which made up our minds that back we’d go
An hour up the track the sun broke through
For the rest of the day the shy was blue
Well washed bush was fresh and clean
The sun dappled through in hues of green

Way out in front was Michael Bent
So in his pack the mountain radio went
One by one we took our turn
To cross the wire over the Wairaurahiri and Rata burn
Ten hours on the track was quite a long day
But we were in time for a dip at Teal Bay

To greet the boat needed an early start
So Jeff let of something loud sounding like tart
To Johan and Joyce we said goodbye
Vowing to come back for another try
The coffee and food was hard to top
At Tuatapere where we had the last food stop.

Death to the Stoats Wednesday, 14 June 2006
Hello again,
This winter Johan and I have been thinking of ways to give something back to the part of Fiordland that we love so much.
We have come up with a Stoat trapping plan that we all can be part of, either as a sponsor of traps or as a guest on our boat, setting the traps.
We are sure that this will make a differnce to the dwindling bird life along the river and Lake.
Stoats are such an efficent killer of nesting birds, flightless birds and the young chicks. I am sure that we all would like to make a difference.
So book your trip with us and be envolved in a conservation initative.
For more details contact us, We would love to hear from you.
Regards
Joyce
